Default Dying for a colourful GW

I would like to see some improvements with dyes. The ability to colour your weapons and armours is great, however not perfect. To illustrate, have you ever tried to dye a warrior's basic armour? Unfortunately, you may change only the colour of the rings in your suit, not the colour of the suit itself.
Looks like you can't entirely colour your platemail in black, for example. I hope ArenaNet would be kind enough to modify the colouring area of some items. Surely not now, as they are probably working day and night for the release, but in the nearby future.

That's it for my rant .

quickly edit your thread, before william of orange comes in here and bitches!

i made a thread previously about the customization of characters, this seems to fall into the catagory.

Near future yes, because customization of unique characters is what makes a good game addictive.

I wanted to have a red suit jacket on my Mesmer, coupled with black hose and boots. Classy, eh? Well, no. Turns out "Red" in the Guild Wars world is more a "Murky, shitty brown". I spent the remainder of the BWE constantly using dye remover, attempting to wash the stains out. At least give us the option to preview the dyes' real colour before we buy, please. It was a Versace!

a preview interface would be really nice. maybe something like the cape design interface or a chance to look at your paper doll. i would personally like to be able to control dying other parts of my armor, besides the trim.

How about a dye vendor? Or a one-stop shop clothier/tailor? In pre-searing I wandered all over the place looking for new armor (for the sole reason of trying to look different) and only found the trader people late Saturday. (And would have had more to do with them if I'd realised they were more than mere NPC's. But that's another rant. ^_^)

I hate when the dyed armor in your inventory doesn't match the dyed armor on you. This happened with my elementalist. The inventory armor looked all red and fiery, but when I saw it on me it was just the normal one with orange stripes. Maybe they haven't finished matching what it should look like to what it does look like? Hoping for better options in future.

Also, this has to be a Ranger armour. Like, now. Giving Mesmers the only thief-like armour is a bit of a gip, and who doesn't want to be as effortlessly cool as Matthew? The answer is noone, whelps!

Never thought i'd see a Fire Emblem reference come up when I wasn't the one making it. Good show.

As for dying armors... I admit it. I am a banksitting fiend. When the WPE came along, and many people were being let back into the game for the first time in months, I was there, sitting in town with all of my various Elementalist's armors already crafted. The official reason being that, as a tester and a fansite operator, I felt a compulsion to be on hand to answer people's questions - but it can't hurt to show off a little in the process, right? So, a little more flexibility in the dying process would be a welcome addition for me.

Some sets simply don't dye well at all. Take the default Elementalist's armor. It is white, and only the trim changes, it's not a very noticeable difference. The other problem comes due to aesthetics (for individuals that aren't color blind and actually care about these things) but a lot of armor .. is primarily brown. Outside of sandtones / earthtones, there are not many colors that go well with brown. So if you're a Ranger, and want to dye parts of your armor yellow, that's great .. if you don't mind looking something like a hotdog with mustard on it. What i'd like to see is an option for dying the "Primary" and "Secondary" color of each armor. That way, those of us that take pride in our character as something more than a l337 collection of killing numbers have something more to work with. Granted, you might see some people running around with garish combinations as a result of it, but so what? Just say they're Tinkers and be done with it. (There is the WoT reference for the week.) It's certainly a serviceable gold sink, as dyes are hard to come by, and at least speaking for myself, I like to use combination colors on my sets. (Blue + Green + Silver, on most armors, comes out with a nice teal color.)

I competly agree. You should be able to dye a Primary and secondary part of your armor. Some of the armors when you dye them they are a joke. The warriors, rangers, and elementalists armor barley dye at all. As a elementalist myself I use the pyromancer armor and there is only one peice of the armor that really looks dyed and it is the robe. The gloves you can't even tell they are dyed because the part that is dyed is so small it is ridiculous, the only way you could tell it was dyed is if you use a really bright color. The pants are really the bigest joke you have ever seen because the part that is dyed is covered by your robe. I would love to be able to dye the purple and grey parts of the armor, it would make customization so much better for people that really care about how there armor looks. I think it would be sweet to have white armor with the flames red.

Arenanet has said that need for character customization would be satisfied through dyes. There doesnt seem to be enough dying options to satisfy the need for in game uniqueness, so they will hopefully change this. I for one would really like to be able to dye large sections of characters armour. I can already think of the perfect W/N suit of armour. All black, with hints of red on the edges. Or a W/Mo with all gold armour and hints of white.

Smartass attitude aside, I see the dyeing of armor and such and the original customization of a character as two different subjects. And considering that the dyes have already been a part of the game, the system would only have to be expanded upon to improve the look of your characters, where as most of the suggestions that were made in your thread Allah would take quite a lot longer to work on, and may come out in expansions. Right now, I would agree that the dyeing system is limited in its abilites, and I would like to see it worked on, since it seems that whenever I've used the few dyes that are dropped for me, the outcome is less than desireable.

And for you Allah, I'll leave you with a favorite saying of one of my teachers:
"You know what happens when you assume? It makes an ass out of "u" and me."

I don't know about you, but I've never been addicted to a good game because of how the characters look. I've been addicted to the game because of how the game plays. And I'd appreciate that if you're going to try and rip on me, do it in a more civil way, rather than just saying I'm going to come in and "bitch."

Agreed; it seems that whenever I've used dyes on my Ranger's chest armor, only a very minimal amount of area is actually dyed, and the color never seems to match what I envisioned in my head. Multiple dyes on different areas of the same armor would be ideal, especially so we could have things such as your Gold/White W/Mo armor; that color scheme seems quite...majestic, for lack of another word.

P.S. "Regal" also comes to mind in place of majestic

Well we all have different opinions, but aside from that I wonder if there is ways to really relay the communities concerns and suggestions to the actual developers. Or do the devs just come and browse occasionally?

Co2 - The devs definately come reading. Gaile just replied to another thread today [in regards to a Fansite Friday], and I mean hell - we have the powerful guru trident going here!

Gaile did start a thread where you can post suggestions for improvement - she has several times that the she does read it and the better suggestions are passed to the devs. Link: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=1048

True, I thought about posting this suggestion there, however I was far from sure it is a valid one.

This was the idea I've been thinking of, but wasn't sure how to word it. Primary and Secondary colors is as good a choice as any I suppose.
I've got friends who purposely chose weaker armor sets because stronger sets did not show dye additions very well, if at all.

I was using Purple and Blue for a more distinctive Blue, on the armor it actually looked like a lighter Blue than I thought it was going to be, which was perfect for me as I was going to mix a Silver in there as well, but figured I'd test it out first on one of the less noticable armor pieces.

I also think some sort of display of what the final result is going to look like before commiting the rather expensive dyes to a final use would be nice.

If they don't include a crafting option to change the primary (base) color then it would be nice if they created a Clothier NPC that had precolored equipment.

It would copy the equipment you were currently wearing to identical ones in a range of basic colors. Sort of an advanced dye vendor.
You could then purchase a replacement item of the new color for a reasonable price.

Dyes could be applied to the new item as normal.

Going back to the original "rant" that was one reason why I gave up on dying anything. With the basic stuff there was no real advantage to dying anything as you would hardly notice any difference. I was expecting a much more dramatic change. I didn't even bother dying anything thing else as It seemed a waste of something that I could get more Gold for (as in Feb, gold was a scarce commodity).
The idea of a selective dying scheme sounds great. Do you want to Dye the primary or trim color? Giving a player that kind of flare, rather than do you want a frilly poofed out pants or feather in your helm, sounds much more appealing to me.
